This project focused on redesigning GrubHub’s restaurant-side interface to improve efficiency and usability for restaurant staff managing online orders. Through stakeholder interviews with workers at Poke Chop and Dirty Birds, we identified major pain points in the current system, including a cluttered vertical layout, disruptive full-screen notifications, and tedious navigation. Our redesign proposed a horizontally structured interface that consolidates order categories, introduces a quick-access order widget, and minimizes workflow interruptions. By prioritizing clarity, speed, and screen space optimization, the new design streamlines order management and better supports staff during peak business hours.

Restaurant managers and employees organize online orders using the touchscreen interface to allow for the propagation of successful meal preparations — lack of intuitive and direct interfaces could lead to employees’ reduced task efficiency and effectiveness, especially during peak business hours.

Stakeholder Interview Summary

To better understand real-world challenges with GrubHub’s restaurant-side interface, we conducted an in-person interview with a staff member at Poke Chop. The interviewee, who regularly manages online orders, expressed strong dissatisfaction with GrubHub’s usability—describing the interface as cluttered, confusing, and disruptive during peak hours. Compared to DoorDash, GrubHub's layout required excessive scrolling, had misleading green box visuals that looked like buttons, and forced users to manually input estimated prep times before proceeding—slowing down task flow. The interview provided key insights into how inefficient order presentation, lack of screen space optimization, and poor navigation design impacted daily operations.
